Carlos Queiroz Reappointed as Ghana Coach Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Ghana Football Association announced today that Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as coach of the Black Stars. The veteran Portuguese stepped down following Ghana's 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ on 3 July. However, two months later, the 73-year-old has come to terms with the GFA to guide the African side.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as head coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme, read a GFA statement. Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago.

Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window. The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter.

Queiroz initially took on the role in April ahead of the global finals and steered Ghana through the group stage, where they beat Panama 1-0 and secured an impressive 0-0 draw with England. While they lost 2-1 against Croatia in their final group game, Ghana qualified for the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams before falling to Colombia.

Ghana return to action later this month in CAFAfrica Cup of Nations qualifying, as they face Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia and Somalia in Group C. The finals will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda across June and July of next year.
